How to Lay Out, Bond, and Finish an Adhered Thin Brick Wall

Follow the adhered-wall sequence: verify material, substrate and exposure; dry-lay courses, set corners, bond units, fill joints and clean without damage.

For a basic adhered thin brick veneer installation, first identify the veneer material, attachment method, substrate, and exposure. Then prepare the wall, measure and dry-lay the courses, establish level lines, place corner units before field units, bond each brick with the approved material, finish the joints, and clean the surface without damaging it. Measurements in this guide are examples from one Glen-Gery system, not universal specifications; the selected products, approved assembly, warranty conditions, and local requirements control.

Confirm the system before starting

Use this four-part decision gate before purchasing materials or mixing bonding material:

  1. Material: Is the veneer fired clay, concrete, fly ash, or another product?
  2. Attachment: Is the veneer adhered, panelized, or mechanically anchored?
  3. Substrate: Is the wall drywall, backer board, concrete, masonry, tile, wood-based sheathing, or another surface?
  4. Exposure: Is the installation in a dry interior, outdoors, or in a wet area?

The practical steps below apply to a basic adhered installation, particularly a decorative interior wall. They are not a complete specification for anchored veneer, exterior walls, showers, or other wet-area assemblies.

Material identity matters. The Brick Industry Association states that its Technical Notes are written for fired brick made from clay, shale, or similar substances. It warns that applying those recommendations to concrete, fly-ash, or other unfired products may not produce the same performance and may harm the product or building. Fired-clay guidance therefore should not be transferred automatically to non-clay veneer products (BIA Technical Notes).

Before purchasing or installing materials, collect the veneer and bonding-material instructions, approved assembly details, warranty conditions, and applicable local requirements. Where those documents conflict with a generic method, follow the documents controlling the actual product and project.

Gather the tools and measure the wall

Have the layout, mixing, cutting, jointing, cleanup, and protective equipment ready before starting. Glen-Gery’s basic checklist includes the following (Glen-Gery thin brick installation guide):

  • Tape measure, chalk line, and level
  • Buckets, mixing equipment, and a mixing paddle or stick
  • Caulking gun and tarp
  • Masonry-blade saw or wet saw
  • Grout bag with a metal tip
  • Mortar scoop or trowel
  • Jointing tool
  • Stiff fiber or bristle brush
  • Gloves and safety glasses
  • A dust mask, as listed in the manufacturer’s basic checklist

Select cutting controls and respiratory protection according to the tool and product instructions and applicable workplace-safety and exposure-control requirements.

Measure the total project area before purchasing veneer and installation materials.

Do not apply a universal waste percentage. Resolving the layout before ordering provides a more useful estimate than adding an arbitrary allowance.

Prepare and screen the substrate

The wall must be secure and compatible with the specified bonding system. Glen-Gery’s method advises against applying its thin brick over wallpaper, smooth tile, or damp surfaces. It says water-resistant drywall, cement board, or tile backer board may be installed when necessary, but that is not universal approval for every veneer, bonding material, substrate, or exposure.

Stop the installation if the wall is damp, unstable, covered with wallpaper, or faced with smooth tile for which no approved preparation method has been supplied.

Check the selected veneer and bonding-material instructions for acceptable substrates and required preparation. Resolve loose coatings, contamination, transitions, penetrations, and exposed edges before beginning layout.

Plan the courses and cuts before bonding

Calculate the vertical course spacing as:

Brick height + planned mortar-joint width = course spacing

Transfer that spacing to the wall with level horizontal chalk lines. Check the accumulated layout across several courses so small measuring differences do not become conspicuous farther up the wall.

Glen-Gery identifies 3/8 inch as its standard mortar-joint width while allowing adjustments for appearance. This is a manufacturer-specific example, not a mandatory measurement for every thin brick system (Glen-Gery thin brick installation guide).

Dry-lay the base course before applying bonding material. Use the dry layout to locate end cuts, test the selected bond pattern, and see how the courses meet corners, openings, outlets, transitions, and wall ends. Running bond is one option rather than a universal requirement.

Minor spacing adjustments may reduce cutting or avoid conspicuously narrow pieces, provided the revised spacing remains compatible with the product and intended appearance. Settle the treatment of corners, ends, and openings before mixing or spreading the bonding material.

Set corner units, field brick, and cuts

Begin with corner units where the design uses them. In the Glen-Gery method, the long and short legs alternate from one course to the next.

Fill the field in the planned pattern, follow the horizontal course lines, and maintain the intended joint spacing. Check the work periodically with a level rather than assuming that the chalk lines or previously placed units remain accurate.

For its thin brick, Glen-Gery directs installers to apply a 1/4- to 3/8-inch layer of non-sag adhesive to each unit and press it firmly onto the wall. That thickness and unit-by-unit method are examples from the Glen-Gery installation guide. Use them only when the veneer and adhesive manufacturers approve the adhesive, application method, thickness, substrate, and exposure.

Make required cuts with a masonry-blade saw or wet saw where permitted by the product instructions. Follow the saw manufacturer’s operating directions and the veneer manufacturer’s cutting and protective-equipment requirements. Where practical, arrange pieces so factory edges remain at the most visible locations.

Fill, tool, and clean the mortar joints

Wait until the bonded veneer is ready for joint filling under the controlling product instructions. Glen-Gery’s method specifies Type N mortar placed with a grout bag, but this mortar type is not universally required or approved for every veneer system.

In that method, joint filling begins at the base, with horizontal joints filled before vertical joints. Pack and shape the joints consistently while avoiding unnecessary mortar smears on the brick faces.

Allow the mortar to firm before tooling. Glen-Gery describes the readiness point as mortar that crumbles like dry sand. For a concave profile, its sequence is to tool the vertical joints before the horizontal joints.

Remove loose residue with a stiff fiber or bristle brush. Glen-Gery discourages wire brushes because they may scratch the brick. Do not assume one fixed cleanup time or one cleaner is safe for every installation. Reconcile the cleanup window, tools, and cleaning products with the brick, mortar, adhesive, and cleaner instructions.

Know where the basic method stops

A simplified adhered-veneer sequence does not establish complete requirements for exterior moisture management, waterproofing, weather-resistive layers, flashing, drainage, wall-base details, movement joints, structural suitability, curing conditions, or code compliance.

Its Technical Notes webpage is an index rather than a complete adhered thin brick specification. Review the scope and currency of each bulletin before relying on it, and do not apply anchored-veneer requirements automatically to an adhered system (BIA technical resources).

Do BIA fired-clay brick recommendations apply to concrete thin brick?

Not automatically. BIA scopes the cited recommendations to fired-clay brick and advises against assuming they will provide the same performance with concrete, fly-ash, or other unfired products. Use the concrete veneer manufacturer’s instructions and approved assembly details.

Is a 3/8-inch mortar joint required for every thin brick installation?

No. It is the standard dimension given in the cited Glen-Gery method, which also allows adjustment for appearance. Another system may require or permit a different width. Confirm the joint dimension against the actual units, corner pieces, bond pattern, and product instructions before snapping course lines.

Can this basic method be used unchanged on an exterior wall?

No. The placement sequence may help organize the work, but it does not define a complete exterior assembly. Weather resistance, flashing, drainage, penetrations, movement, attachment, curing, substrate suitability, and applicable code requirements must be resolved through the controlling product and project documents.
