How to Build Straight, Consistent Brickwork From the First Course Up
Dry-lay the first course, establish accurate corners, use a mason’s line, and check level, plumb, bond and joints before errors compound.
Successful bricklaying follows a controlled sequence: confirm the base and project requirements, dry-lay the design, mix manageable mortar batches, establish accurate corners and a first course, stretch a mason’s line, build the specified bond, tool the joints at the right time, and protect the fresh work. Check line, level, plumb, bond, and joint consistency throughout the job rather than trying to correct accumulated errors at the top.
Start here: the bricklaying sequence and the limits of a DIY guide
For a small, properly designed brick project, use this sequence:
- Establish what the wall will do and which requirements apply.
- Confirm that the base is suitable for the proposed work.
- Measure the wall and dry-lay the first course.
- Confirm the bond, openings, corners, cuts, and joint dimensions.
- Select the specified mortar and mix a manageable batch.
- Establish the corner units or short corner leads.

This workflow is not a structural design. Obtain project-specific guidance if the masonry is load-bearing, retaining, tall, freestanding, a veneer, or associated with an opening. The same applies when the footing, reinforcement, wall ties, flashing, drainage, movement joints, or temporary bracing have not been established.
In the United States, TMS 402 addresses masonry design and TMS 602 addresses construction requirements. Their provisions become mandatory when incorporated into applicable regulations, while the accompanying commentary is advisory. Editions differ, so verify the locally adopted edition and the project specifications rather than assuming that the newest publication automatically governs the work.1
TMS 602 covers preparation, bond patterns, placement of mortar and units, tolerances, reinforcement, anchors, weather protection, and field quality control. Those decisions depend on the approved design, applicable requirements, and project specifications.
Do not transfer concrete-block details directly to clay-brick construction. Block-wall systems may use one-inch mortar beds, reinforcement in hollow cores, and core-fill grout, but those are system-specific details rather than general clay-brick instructions.2
Gather the basic tools and plan the wall before mixing
The basic bricklaying tools are:
- Brick trowel
- Spirit level
- Jointing tool
- Tape measure
- Mason’s line with line pins or secure line blocks
- Soft-bristled brush
Also provide suitable mixing equipment, measured water containers, a mortar board, and any measuring or cutting equipment required by the approved design. Clear enough space to work and keep materials within practical reach without blocking access. Prepare the receiving surface in accordance with the selected mortar instructions. For example, QUIKRETE No. 1102 directs users to start with a dry, clean surface free of dirt, loose debris, grease, and oil.3 If the suitability or position of the base has not been established for the proposed wall, resolve that condition before treating this workflow as project-ready.
Before mixing mortar, dry-lay a course with the actual bricks intended for the job. Check:
- Overall wall length
- Corners, returns, and end positions
- Openings
- Specified head-joint width
- Bond pattern and offsets
- Likely cut locations
- Agreement with the approved dimensions
Brickwork gauge means planning the wall and its courses from actual unit dimensions plus the specified joints. Do not assume a universal joint dimension. Confirm that the selected brick, joint dimensions, and bond can produce the required layout.

A dry layout cannot resolve missing design details, but it can reveal possible joint, cut, opening, and end-condition problems before mortar is mixed.
Choose and mix mortar without relying on a universal recipe
Mortar must be selected for the brick, wall function, exposure, structural demands, and governing specification. Do not assume that Type N mortar—or a fixed sand-to-cement ratio—is appropriate for every project.

QUIKRETE Mortar Mix No. 1102 is one product-specific example. The manufacturer describes it as a premixed Type N mortar for laying brick, block, or stone. Its instructions and reported figures apply to that product; they do not establish that it is suitable for every wall.

For laying bricks, mortar should be workable and cohesive enough to stay on the trowel, spread into a continuous bed, and support a brick without flowing excessively from the joint.
Measure batches consistently. With packaged mortar, follow the specified water range and mixing method rather than estimating from appearance alone. With an approved site mix, repeat the specified proportions accurately. Mix only an amount that can be placed while it remains workable, particularly when heat, wind, or limited experience slows production. Adjust or reuse mortar only as permitted by the applicable product instructions or specification.
Establish the corners and lay the first course
The first course establishes the wall’s position, elevation, joint pattern, and alignment. It deserves more checking than a typical later course.
Mark the wall faces, ends, corners, and openings from the approved layout. Set the first corner units—or short corner leads—then confirm their position and elevation. Stretch a mason’s line between the established points to guide the intervening bricks.
Spread a full, even mortar bed over a manageable length. Lightly draw the trowel through the center to form a shallow furrow, while retaining enough mortar to bed the units fully. Bed depth is controlled by the selected mortar and project requirements. As a product-specific example, QUIKRETE No. 1102 calls for an initial full bed approximately 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick; that is not a universal finished-joint dimension.3
Place the first brick into the bed and press it downward and slightly toward the previously laid unit with a small twisting motion. Form the adjoining head joint by the method required for the work. Aim for a stable, seated unit with filled joints.
Make adjustments gently while the mortar remains workable, then remove displaced excess. Check each unit for:
- Position and elevation
- Level along its length and across its width
- Alignment with the mason’s line
- Consistent bed and head joints
- Stable seating
After completing the first course, inspect the full run. Confirm its level, line, wall position, openings, end conditions, and agreement with the dry layout before adding height.
Build subsequent courses while controlling bond, line, level, and plumb
Build the corners or leads upward in controlled stages rather than taking one end far above the rest of the wall. Reposition the mason’s line for every course and keep it taut enough to provide a reliable face reference.
Where running or stretcher bond is specified, successive vertical joints are commonly staggered by approximately half a brick.4 This does not make running bond suitable for every structural or architectural condition. Follow the bond shown in the approved design, including its treatment of corners, returns, openings, and cut units.
Use the line to control the wall face without pushing bricks against it. Set each brick just clear of the line and periodically sight along the course for developing waves or isolated projections.
Use a repeatable inspection rhythm:
- Check the first brick in each new area.
- Check each corner or lead as it rises.
- Check the complete first course before building higher.
- Check every subsequent course against the mason’s line.
- Check level along the course and across the wall thickness.
- Check plumb at the wall face and corners.
- Confirm the bond and joint consistency as work progresses.
These controls are separate. Bricks can be individually level while the wall face wanders because the line is misplaced. A course can also follow the line while the wall leans out of plumb.
Correct small errors while the mortar remains workable. A high brick can affect the next unit, and repeated joint-width errors can alter an opening or end position.
Tool the joints, clean the face, and protect fresh brickwork
Inspect joints before finishing and fill visible deficiencies with compatible workable mortar. Do not shape the surface while knowingly leaving an unfilled area behind it.
Use the thumbprint test to judge timing.
Shape the specified joint profile with steady pressure from the selected tool. Keep the profile consistent across bed joints, head joints, corners, and short units. For No. 1102, QUIKRETE says tooling at thumbprint hardness gives a neat finish and helps make the joints watertight.3
Once loose residue has firmed sufficiently, remove it carefully with a soft-bristled brush. Avoid spreading wet mortar over the brick faces during cleanup.
Protect fresh masonry from rain, freezing, and premature drying. Exact covering, enclosure, heating, curing, and protection procedures must come from the governing specification and selected mortar instructions. No single temperature rule applies universally.
For QUIKRETE No. 1102 specifically, the manufacturer directs users to protect the mortar from freezing for its first 48 hours and to apply a gentle mist in very hot, dry, or windy conditions to limit premature drying. These directions are product-specific and should not be transferred to another mortar without checking its current documentation.3
Use a checkpoint table to catch problems before they compound
Use defined hold points throughout the job. Continue only when the work is ready for the next stage.

Stop if the completed work or its support develops a significant unresolved condition, such as movement, loose units, or accumulated misalignment. A basic laying procedure does not establish the cause or an appropriate structural repair. Preserve access to the affected area and obtain a project-specific decision rather than concealing the condition with additional masonry.
Estimate bricks and mortar using the actual project dimensions
Begin with gross wall area:
Gross wall area = wall length × wall height
Calculate each opening separately and subtract the total:
Net wall area = gross wall area − total opening area
For a basic regular layout, calculate the area represented by one brick and its share of the specified joints:
Coordinating unit area = (brick face length + head joint) × (brick face height + bed joint)
Then estimate the base brick count:
Estimated bricks = net wall area ÷ coordinating unit area
This is a planning estimate, not an exact cutting schedule. Bond patterns, corners, returns, piers, openings, decorative work, and partial units can change the quantity. Add a project-appropriate allowance for cuts, breakage, selection, and waste rather than applying an unexplained universal percentage.
An exact quantity requires:
- Wall length and height
- Opening sizes and locations
- Actual brick dimensions
- Specified bed and head joints
- Bond pattern
- Corner and return details
- Waste assumptions
Estimate mortar only after establishing the relevant brick count, using the coverage stated for the exact product and package size under consideration. QUIKRETE reports approximate coverage of 37 standard 8-by-2-by-4-inch bricks per 80-pound bag of No. 1102.3
The bounded calculation is:
Estimated 80-pound bags = relevant brick count ÷ 37
Round up to whole bags before adding any project-specific allowance. For example:
185 bricks ÷ 37 bricks per bag = 5 bags before project-specific waste
Actual consumption can vary with brick dimensions, joint dimensions, bed thickness, dropped material, filled voids, workmanship, and site conditions. The reported yield also does not establish that this mortar is appropriate for the wall.
Accurate brickwork comes from repeated checkpoints: plan before mixing, make the first course exact, follow the specified bond, and check line, level, plumb, and joints continuously. Tool the mortar at the appropriate condition and protect the fresh work promptly. If the base, structural role, moisture details, reinforcement, or local approval requirements remain unresolved, obtain project-specific guidance before building higher.
