Pallet Forks for Loaders & Tractors: Ratings, Geometry & the Tip-Over Math
How to choose pallet forks for a tractor or skid steer — frame class, ratings, and the load-center math that keeps the rear wheels down.

Pallet forks turn a loader into a materials-handling machine — and change its physics more than any other attachment, because the load moves out in front of the axle where leverage works against you.
The rating chain
A fork setup is rated by its weakest link: the fork tines (rated as a pair at a stated load center, usually 24”), the carriage/frame, the quick-attach interface, and — the one everyone forgets — the loader itself, whose lift capacity at full height is the real ceiling. A 4,000-lb fork set on a 1,600-lb-capacity compact tractor loader is a 1,600-lb system wearing 4,000-lb badges.
Load center is the fine print that matters: ratings assume the load’s center of gravity 24 inches out. Carry a 48-inch-deep crate and the effective capacity drops sharply — the same physics as a torque wrench, working against your rear axle.
Choosing the hardware
- Class II carriage covers most compact/utility equipment; skid steers use their universal quick-attach.
- Tine length: 42” handles standard 40×48 pallets cleanly (tips shouldn’t protrude past the load — that’s how the pallet behind gets stabbed); 48” for deeper loads.
- Walk-through frames with a top guard beat bare bolt-ons the first time a load shifts backward.
- Adjustable tine spacing beats welded, always — loads vary, spines don’t.
The tip-over math, respected
Ballast is not optional on tractors: a loaded implement or wheel weights behind the rear axle, per the tractor manual’s loader section. Carry loads low — tines a foot off the ground in transit; capacity at full height can be half the ground-level number, and the ride up is where machines go light in the rear. Curl the tines slightly back, cross slopes straight up and down rather than sideways, and get off the machine to strap anything that can slide.
The pros’ one-liner holds: forks don’t tip machines — height, speed, and slope tip machines; forks just hold the weight out where those three can work.
