What Dyed Diesel Can Save Your Construction Fleet

Run dyed diesel in every machine confirmed eligible for non-highway fuel, but keep clear taxed diesel in dump trucks and other vehicles that travel public roads. There is no official national off-road diesel price for 2026, so the real discount is the difference between matched local quotes. For context, EIA reported U.S. on-highway diesel at $5.652 per gallon on August 24, 2026; the often-cited $0.30–$0.50 per-gallon dyed discount is only a commercial planning range.

No Official National Off-Road Price Exists

The U.S. Energy Information Administration publishes weekly on-highway diesel prices, including taxes, but does not publish a dedicated off-road diesel price series. That prevents an authoritative national off-road-versus-on-road price gap from being calculated.

EIA describes off-road diesel as red-dyed fuel sold for equipment and vehicles not usually operated on public roads. Qualifying uses are not subject to the federal and state highway excise taxes applied to retail highway diesel, although other taxes may still apply.

Commercial fuel sellers commonly cite approximately $0.30–$0.50 per gallon as a dyed-diesel discount. Treat that range as a preliminary scenario, not a guaranteed local saving. Supplier margin, delivery charges, order size, state tax treatment and terminal conditions can move the invoice gap in either direction.

A defensible comparison uses clear and dyed quotes from the same supplier, on the same date, for the same delivery point, volume, product specification and payment terms.

The August 2026 Highway Benchmark Was $5.652

The latest supported national snapshot is $5.652 per gallon for U.S. on-highway diesel on August 24, 2026. It was a weekly observation released the following day, not a full-year average.

EIA’s Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update showed substantial geographic variation on that date:

The $4.085 U.S. figure also displayed for August 24 was regular gasoline, not diesel.

These benchmarks establish market context but do not represent every pump, cardlock or bulk-delivery transaction. They also cannot be converted into a local dyed price merely by subtracting one tax amount.

Dye Identifies Tax Status, Not Fuel Performance

The principal price advantage comes from highway-tax treatment, not the red dye itself. Dye does not add energy, improve efficiency or create a performance advantage.

Tax classification must also be separated from product quality. Clear and dyed diesel may be broadly comparable, but additives and specifications can differ by supplier. Confirm the fuel grade, sulfur specification, biodiesel content, cold-flow treatment and additive package against the machine manufacturer’s requirements.

The available evidence does not support treating dyed diesel as inherently dirtier, less efficient, higher in sulfur or harmful to modern equipment. The invoice should identify the actual product being delivered rather than relying only on labels such as “red,” “off-road” or “non-road” diesel.

Delivered Cost Can Narrow The Tax Advantage

The price basis determines whether two numbers can be compared. Terminal rack, wholesale, retail pump and delivered bulk prices represent different transactions.

A Southeast Florida supplier estimates dyed diesel at $0.30–$0.55 less per gallon in wholesale markets, a $0.32–$0.40 rack-price difference, and $0.30–$0.50 less in a delivered comparison. It also estimates $2.95–$3.45 per gallon delivered for standard-volume Southeast Florida off-road orders in 2026. These are overlapping commercial estimates from a fuel seller, not an independent market average or guaranteed price. That regional delivered estimate cannot be subtracted from EIA’s $5.652 national retail benchmark. The geography, transaction type, order volume and timing do not match.

Also record the gallons ordered, delivery address, quote expiration, payment terms and product specification. If one order has a fixed trip or minimum-load charge, divide that charge by gallons delivered before comparing per-gallon costs.

The direct calculation is: matched clear delivered price minus matched dyed delivered price equals observed savings per gallon.

Do not subtract taxes unless the starting price actually includes the verified taxes being removed. State sales tax, local treatment, supplier margin and delivery costs may still affect the dyed invoice.

Machine-Hour Savings Depend On Actual Fuel Burn

No authoritative fuel-burn figures for the listed machine classes were supplied, and machine size alone is not enough to produce a defensible rate. A 20-ton excavator’s consumption changes with engine, load factor, idle time, attachment and operator behavior.

Use telematics, fuel logs or measured gallons divided by operating hours. Then calculate clear cost per machine-hour as clear price per gallon multiplied by gallons per hour. Calculate dyed cost the same way with the matched dyed price.

For weekly savings, multiply the price gap by gallons per hour and weekly operating hours. For an annual planning scenario, multiply again by the number of operating weeks used in the estimate.

At the commercial planning gap of $0.30–$0.50 per gallon, 2,000 eligible gallons would produce $600–$1,000 per month in gross scenario savings. If that volume and gap remained unchanged for 12 months, the arithmetic would be $7,200–$12,000. At 10,000 eligible gallons, the scenario saving would be $3,000–$5,000.

Those are sensitivity calculations, not forecasts. Net savings must account for tank purchase or rental, site preparation, delivery minimums, inspections, maintenance, inventory, contamination risk, recordkeeping and compliance administration.

Excavators And Loaders Are Typical Candidates

Excavators, compact track loaders, dozers, wheel loaders, cranes, compactors and similar machines kept in non-highway service are typical candidates for dyed diesel. Stationary and portable generators may also qualify depending on their use and applicable rules.

Equipment type does not settle eligibility by itself. Confirm where the machine operates, how it is registered and whether it travels on public roads. Manufacturer fuel and emissions requirements remain applicable regardless of tax status.

A dump truck that works on dirt most of the day but travels between projects on public roads should not be treated as eligible merely because most of its hours occur off pavement. Budget clear diesel until the vehicle’s treatment has been verified.

Mixed-use equipment, road crossings, refrigeration units, marine engines, heating systems and fuel transferred through service trucks require jurisdiction-specific review. IRS Publication 510 explains federal fuel excise taxes, credits and refunds, but state rules and the exact operating pattern may also control the result.

Separate Storage Protects The Road Fleet

Operations using both fuels should make cross-fueling difficult. Use clearly marked tanks, fill points, hoses, nozzles and mobile fueling units. Restrict access and retain records linking purchases to the claimed use.

Useful records include supplier invoices, delivery tickets, product descriptions, gallons received, destination tanks, equipment-fueling logs, exemption certificates and internal transfers. Exact documentation and retention rules vary by jurisdiction and claim type.

Publication 510 identifies Form 4136 for claiming a credit for federal tax paid on fuels and Form 8849 for excise-tax refund claims. The publication was revised in December 2025 and says it is not updated annually, so current developments and form instructions must be checked before filing.

If dyed diesel enters a vehicle that may use a public road, stop using it, isolate it and document the date, estimated gallons, source tank, operator and circumstances. Contact the supplier and obtain current federal and state guidance before moving, draining or returning the unit to service. A supplier’s accidental-misfueling guidance offers a precautionary checklist, but its jurisdiction-specific legal claims require official verification.

Bid Trucks At The Clear-Diesel Price

Separate road-fleet gallons from eligible equipment gallons in every estimate. Excavators and loaders with confirmed qualifying use can be priced from the matched dyed quote. Dump trucks, service trucks, pickups and other public-road vehicles should be priced from the clear quote. Carry a conservative clear-diesel allowance for unresolved mixed-use units.

A Minnesota construction report cited retail diesel at $5.045 per gallon in early June 2026, up 48.6% from approximately $3.40 a year earlier. The observation was not identified as an off-road price and should not be used as a national dyed benchmark. The report also described an Oregon Department of Transportation fuel escalation and de-escalation clause tied to a monthly index. That is one agency’s approach, not a universal contract standard. Finance & Commerce reported the figures and contract example.

The Associated General Contractors of America reported that the producer price index for diesel fuel increased 20.3% from January to February 2026 and was 3.1% higher than a year earlier. A producer price index measures change and cannot be converted directly into a retail per-gallon price. AGC linked the increase to pressure on construction and transportation costs.

Keep the underlying diesel-price assumption separate from the dyed discount. The base fuel price can rise while the clear-versus-dyed gap narrows. Refresh both quotes near bid submission, state which party carries escalation risk and retain the supporting quote sheets.

The working rule is simple: use $5.652 only as dated national context, not as a local off-road price. Price trucks with clear diesel, price confirmed non-highway machines with dyed diesel, and apply the matched local gap only to eligible gallons.
